Begin your day with an artistic pilgrimage to Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia, two must-visit sites for understanding Medellin's rich cultural heritage.
The Plaza Botero is home to 23 larger-than-life sculptures by the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero, whose distinctive oversize style and social commentary have made him one of the country's most celebrated artists.
Adjacent to the plaza, the Museo de Antioquia houses an impressive collection of Botero's works, as well as a broader exploration of Colombian art, history, and identity.
Make sure to ask museum staff questions about exhibits; practicing phrases like “¿Dónde puedo encontrar la obra de arte de…?” (Where can I find the artwork of...?) will help you engage more deeply.
Whilst in the area it’s also recommend to visit the Palace of Culture (Palacio de la Cultura Rafael Uribe Uribe) which stands right in front of the museum. Here you can see more museum style exhibits, art and there’s a rooftop venue which gives you a fantastic view of downtown. It’s open 8am to 530pm and you might need to bring foto ID to get in.
After all this culture you surely must be hungry. Whilst there’s a million restaurant options in el centro you can’t miss the authentic paisa dishes served at Hacienda restaurant. It’s about a 10 minute walk away from Plaza Botero. The food is top quality and servings sizes are large so you won’t leave hungry, ask for the paisa specialty Bandeja Paisa. You might want to consider sharing a plate between 2.
The museum is open everyday, 10am to 5:30pm, and admission is about 30,000COP. You can get here by Metro (Parque Berrio Station) or take an Uber.
Afternoon Activity
After immersing yourself in the artistic realm, time to blend nature and science with a visit to the Medellin botanic garden and Parque Explora.
The Jardin Botanico de Medellin offers a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city, featuring diverse plant life, tranquil walking trails, and educational exhibits. The garden is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm (Monday public holidays they are open, but the Tuesday after a public holiday they close) and admission to the gardens are free, but the butterfly house is 7,000COP.
Next door, Parque Explora is a science and technology park that brings learning to life through interactive displays, hands-on experiments, and thought-provoking exhibits. The aquarium is the highlight. The park is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm, and general admission is $48,000 or you can buy a combined ticket that includes a visit to the nearby Planetarium for 72,000COP.
Evening Activity
For dinner, journey to the charming neighborhood of Envigado and explore Calle de la Buena Mesa a vibrant area lined with a diverse array of restaurants. This area is known for both its traditional Colombian cuisine, as well as more modern, international offerings.
For a cultural experience you can’t beat Gabo.mde, a Colombian restaurant inspired by “magical realism” a literary genre that incorporates magical or fantastical elements into otherwise realistic settings (the style of Colombia’s greatest author Gabriel García Márquez). A feast for the eyes and the mouth.
For meat lovers you can’t miss Lucio Carbón y Vino widely regarded as one of the best steakhouses in Medellin.
Our favourites also include Olivia (pizza, pasta and healthy options), Jack & Roll (hamburgers) and the yogurt ice-cream from Pércimon is a healthier way to end the night.
